Five Important Aspects Of Business Writing
Even if you’re an untrained writer, you’ll likely need to compose written reports at various times during the course of your business. As such, having the basics of business writing down pat can help you immensely in your daily life. According to the book Business Writing For The Uninitiated, all forms of good business writing will have the following five things working for them.
1. Good business writing is focused.
Good business writing has a clear scope. The coverage may change depending on your recipients, but it needs to be consistent throughout the document, nonetheless.
2. Good business writing is concise.
Unlike other forms of writing where verbosity may be accepted, business writing should be all about the meat of the matter. As such, you will need to trim the fat off your copy, either with the help of an English writing software or by going through the copy on your own.
3. Good business writing packs substance.
While you may be able to get away with making claims and conclusions all day long, providing verifiable proof is necessary to complete any good business writing. To many in your audience, numbers can speak volumes louder than unfounded claims.
4. Good business writing has structure.
Make sure you follow a logical sequence in your writing. It will guide your reader through the text. Doing without one risks muddling their perceptions.
5. Good business writing is humble.
Humility is a virtue, even in writing. Preaching to an audience can work with the right kind of people. For many, though, this is a death sentence, turning off readers before they even get to the good part.
