Using Humor In Your Writing

Posted by admin on Saturday, March 14th, 2009

For business purposes, most writing tends to be fact-based and accomplished with a dry, serious tone.  Designed to inform and impart while wasting as little time as possible, leaving out the jokes for another day helps your text come across as being more professional and respectable.

Other forms of writing, however, may benefit from the injection of a little humor.  A light-hearted quip here and a funny anecdote there can turn an otherwise drab email, term paper or blog post into a more interesting read.

Uncomfortable Subjects

When you’re writing about things that can make people feel uncomfortable, humor can be just the vehicle that allows you to address it without creating resistance among your readers.  Dispensed conservatively, it eases tension even for the most difficult subjects. As long as you don’t trivialize your topic, humor can make it a little easier to digest.

Humor Improves Flow

Humor, inserted towards the end of a section, can give it a meaningful punctuation and a natural rhythm.   It gives readers an incentive to naturally flow  towards the next part of the written work.

Humor Makes An Impression

Funny lines have a way of sticking in our heads.  In fact, I  find it hard to recall plot and characters from many books I’ve read over the years, yet the humorous one-liners used to spice them up continue to stay with me to this day.

Humor Is Yours

Sadly, even the best English software can’t turn your regular writing into humor masterpieces yet.  For now, at least, the light-hearted portions of your writing is still up to you.  If you can handle the comedy, though, we have the English writing software to help you with the rest.
